The European Union (EU) needs an integrated transport system that serves
the needs of business and of individuals, with easy connections between its
different parts. The development of this system requires investment in trans-European
infrastructures to ensure that passenger and freight transport
across the Union and beyond is fast, reliable and safe. High on the agenda
must be systems and methods of transport that will reduce congestion and
pollution and help to achieve a better, cleaner environment.
The development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) provides a real
opportunity in this respect. Through advanced and high-quality services,
people will enjoy greater convenience and business will benefit from lower
costs and higher competitiveness. That investment will mean more efficient,
comfortable and safer highways, railways, inland waterways, airports and
ports and linkages between different modes of transport.
The European Commission is promoting ITS on the trans-European transport
network, linking Europe in all directions. The network includes high-quality
road and rails routes as well as ports, airports and inland waterways.
