Abstract:
The ongoing economic development in the European Union will lead to a constant increase of traffic volumes in the next decennium. Although a strong effort is being made to make more use of other modes of transport, the increase in traffic using the European Road network will be firm. Construction of new roads or widening existing roads will not suffice to keep up with the traffic volumes. In many countries within Europe Traffic Management plans are and will be developed to accommodate the increasing traffic. In most cases these are local or regional plans with local and regional measures. Within Europe there is a strong need to exchange views and opinions about traffic management plans in order to harmonize the approach of traffic management plans. This will lead to more unity and thus comfort for the international road user.
